My gut is telling me….
There is this mythology in the business world that great leaders manage Straight From The Gut!
That they have this mysterious alchemy of business knowledge that tells them to always trust the magical gurgling in their tummy.
All across the country, in the best business schools, young women and men are praying to be blessed with a Super Belly.
It’s all nonsense.
Do you know what your gut is telling you? Your gut is tied to your nervous system. When presented with a new business issue or problem, your nervous system dials in to your past experiences and decides if it should affirm or reject a direction. You are either supportive of the direction or fearful of it based on nothing more than past experiences. That’s it.
Almost all of my clients, used the phrase “my gut is telling me we should head down this path…” as their companies went over the edge of a cliff, straight into bankruptcy. They were managing by fear or familiarity. Those were two primary markers on their steering wheel — and they were always wrong.
What’s the right way?
Assemble and analyze facts and figures with your brain.
If you are in a creative session trying to develop a new product or service, certainly you can play around with inspiration and feeling, However, the rest of your business must collect, organize and distribute accurate data. There are always risks to running a business but the goal is to minimize the risks by making decisions based on facts.
If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it.
The answers should be right in front of you…on computer screen or piece of paper. Sales and Profits should not be a guessing game. Work hard to know exactly what drives productivity and profitability in your business. You can have opinions in business, just be certain that they are based on real numbers and not feelings. Save the squishy emotions for your family, friends and puppies!
If you’re still stuck, call me.
